Tonight Plug eschews its Club and live formats in favour of a combination of the two for a very special ‘versus' event. Plug's flexibility is attributed to spreading the music across its venues, allowing for tri-pronged aural goodness. Stripping the live music to the earlier evening has allowed for the club to flourish in its current capacity, hurling party vibes from a multitude of genres to create the perfect Saturday night soundtrack. May 10th sees a return to the previous cavalcade of live music and DJ led tomfoolery with one solo event, a timely occasion as the festival season snaps into focus, with the Reverend Soundsystem returning to the Steel City to square off against Toolroom Records.
The live music legend of Plug, Reverend Soundsystem was based upon cherry picking the finest bands to provide a detour to the chug and fro of dance music, splicing the acts with their own resident DJs to ensure that the cocktail frothed with a delectable edge. That formula is resurrected with the entertainment for the evening, live showcases from Santogold, Lord of Flatbush and Tudors providing a blistering concoction that boasts toe-tapping beat structures, soaring melodies and a gritty lyrical accompaniment amongst their far-ranging soundscapes. DJs Jon McClure and Jagz Kooner fill the gaps with their rampant indie funk.
And onto the rave. Toolroom are the dons for main room house action, a truly British phenomenon that has taken the world by storm. The brainchild of Ministry of Sound resident and house music leviathan Mark Knight, their ingenuity in sourcing the grooves that work on every variety of dancefloor has set them apart; as equally efficient in churning out the dark groovers for sweaty basements as they are the festival slaying vocal anthems. The UK's dirty house don Dave Spoon headlines, his filthy baselines and gritty funk an inevitable crowd pleasing formula, whilst Plug themselves strengthen the vibe with LJ Freeman and Kissdafunk star Drew Scott.
And if this battle wasn't enough, over in the third room Rizla fess up a considerably erstwhile selection of rare grooves and off beat classics with a battle of their own, as disco and electro legend Greg Wilson goes head to head with Mr Mancunia, the irrepressible Justin Robertson. Both of these figureheads will be ransacking the vaults for an enlightening musical journey, both equally adorned with a huge historical impact over the British dance music scene in the last thirty years and a glittering resume of eclectic achievements. It promises to be some party...
