Press - Review of Sheffield Academy – 23/1/10

They opened with the brilliant "Stress of the Scandal"……..This band has a drummer and two guitarists - but no bassist!?...Their sound is very unique: especially with my personal favourite ‘Pin Down The Detail’ the intro being a futuristic spiralling guitar sound, which then changes slightly as the military drum beat kicks in to add yet another dimension – making this track a wonderful feast for your ears. The Talent in this band is obvious, as each song is presented with confidence and clarity. I suppose really you could compare the band to muse…. – Sheffield Scenester.

A shift of seismic proportions then occurs as The Hope Explosion literally explodes onto the stage. The band consists of a drummer and two guitarists (no bassist) and are in the vague Pixies/Muse mould - sorry to semi-pigeonhole such a vital band, but it is just to give you readers a bit of a clue. They are all very competent musicians, but they also have the songs and confidence that comes with that mastery of their instruments. It's not cock-rock (see how fast my fingers can move on the fretboard) nor is it intellectual-rock per se (songs in 11/16 time about Kierkegaard). They're just a supremely confident band who know that they're great. The sound was crystal clear, with the guitars chiming and soaring both individually and collectively. Likewise, the drums were loud and assured, yet dexterous and light when required.- Counterfeit Magazine
