/// THROATS
Let’s not beat about the bush, the prospects for Throats were initially highly limited. They were a mess – borrowing guitar pedals, plugging guitars into the PA due to lack of amps and their early demos were so badly recorded that it was impossible to tell if this band even had any promise. What has subsequently unfolded is the most unlikely of success stories indeed. Yep, Throats got good. Very, very good infact.
In the last year alone tours have ensued with Gallows and Every Time I Die, Rolo Tomassi, Battletorn, Johnny Truant, Blackhole and The Plight, Ghost of a Thousand, Coliseum, Trash Talk and more, packed shows at the Great Escape and Offset festivals, sold out London headline shows and had releases with Rolo Tomassi, the_Network (USA, Black Market Activities/Metal Blade) and Maths as well as a US deal with Twelve Gauge Records. Phew!
Essentially starting out as a hardcore band along the lines of Converge, Breather Resist and Trap Them, Throats have now evolved into a monster that, whilst nodding to their own past, now encompass a sound that embraces elements of Napalm Death, Rotten Sound, crust and d-beat into their stoned, cosmic riffs and breakdowns. From ‘Wake’ lurching into view and audibly cranking up the gears, the grind onslaught of ‘My Hands are Cold’, to the biker metal apocalypse of ‘Oaken/Wait’ this record wastes no time in simply destroying you.
Throats are not a simple hardcore band any more. Bile, rage and despondency have organically mutated an already bitter and angry band into something far more extreme, reckless and dangerous. This is riff armageddon. This is Throats becoming an entity like no other. This is Throats making their first definitive statement. Be warned – something low from this way comes.
/// LAVOTCHKIN
Intense and untamed hardcore, combining raging guitar parts, distinguished vocals and genuine originality, LAVOTCHKIN are making their mark and shaping a sound that can only belong to them. From the North of England, Lavotchkin, – singer Simon Tittley, guitarists Martin Downing and Ben Wishlade, bassist Simon Hubbard and drummer Paul Hawdon, have already began leaving an impact on the UK scene.
With three European tours under their belts, soon to be four and sharing stages with many of their respected peers including Gallows, The Chariot, The Ghost Of A Thousand, Daughters, The Red Chord, Walls Of Jericho and Rolo Tomassi it’s easy to see this trend is going to continue. Relentless UK touring has established a strong and devoted fan base that is quickly growing throughout the country and in Europe.
The band’s debut EP – The Oldest Suicide Cult - released on Shave the Area Records –Set the bar for times to come and following this up was no difficult task for them, they released a split EP with Joseph on MidMarch Records, the EP sold out and received some credible press plus fans warmed to the way they were developing their sound.
Imaginative riffs that get every mob moving and stomping, astounding and distinctive vocal parts and drumming that will make the floor beneath you tremor are charming anyone who gets to witness the explosive spectacle of a live show. With all this plus pure passion and added determination LAVOTCHKIN are going to be causing riots and leaving the wreckage marks wherever they go. Crushing build-ups and brutal breakdowns have been firmly holding peoples attentions and the ever-growing fan base is only getting stronger.
Now they plan to make 2010 their year, with the release of a brand new EP recorded with Jason Sanderson (the plight, rolo tomassi, errander) and exciting tours planned, the grit is definitely not at its end yet.
/// LOVE AT DEATH BEACH
Newcomers in Sheffield, not without previous though. Formed from the smouldering ashes of various bands including Fury Of Headteachers and Youthmovies; they're almost like a super-group, if that didn't evoke such a cringy prospect.
They say: Featuring ex-members, collaborators and sometime contributors of Fury of the Headteachers (Sheffield's premier dungarees-sporting bin-rooters), Youthmovies (that band), the Slow Blade (a London gigolo depository if ever I saw one) and the Wank Sinatras (actually sued by the Frank Sinatra society, TAKE THAT THE MAN), LADB are done with all that and are attempting to make what they laughably refer to as 'popular music'.
We say: The firepower of Fury of Headteachers, the cerebral lure of Youthmovies thrown together with a host of different influences and a re-invigorated desire not to make 'popular music'.
/// HELLO DAGGER
/// BOYS WITH X-RAY EYES
Boys With Xray Eyes started out in late 2006 as a quintet, who all had something different to bring to the table. Just listening to the demo can show the range of styles within the music. From heavy, blood thirsty riffs to the lighter, melodic harmonising choruses.
Using this to our advantage, we soon became a band that we could all enjoy, finding our own style and genre in every note and beat we played. The tearing riffs, hard hitting drums and intense vocals grabbed people’s attention immediately from playing a few local shows. This led us to a review in NP life magazine and being featured in Metal Hammer magazine’s ‘upcoming’ section.
It was late 2007 when we recorded our first demo album which consists of 11 tracks. The main purpose of this demo was for us to find our sound and see where we wanted to go as a band.
Through 2008 we spent a lot of time playing shows across the U.K trying to establish a solid reputation. We played the welsh leg of Johnny Truant’s ‘No Tears For The Creatures’ tour which was reviewed in Kerrang’s ‘live’ section in July 08.
We have also had the pleasure of sharing a stage with: Skindred, The Architects, Fall of troy, Blessed By A Broken Heart, Azriel, The Hurt process , See You Next Tuesday, Glamour Of The Kill, Shaped By Fate, The Ghost Frequency, The Future, Scars Of Tomorrow, Misery Signals, Johnny Truant, Flood Of Red and many more..
