+ Buke & Gase
Purity Ring have vision. Heaps of it.
The Canadian duo is made up of producer Corrin Riddick and vocalist/lyricist Megan James. You could label their beat-heavy but sweetly melodic sound trap, indie, electro, witch-house or dreampop and you’d be accurate on all counts.
Formed in Edmonton, Canada back in 2010, they enjoy being hard to define. At their core they’re an electronic pop group but they’re signed to 4AD, a label with a fiercely strong indie tradition.
They’ve remixed Lady Gaga’s Applause and collaborated with Danny Brown, yet there’s a DIY quality to what they do, including touring mobile-disco style – with a touch-triggered lighting rig.
Their most recent album, Another Eternity, features vocals that on the one hand are a sugary confection but on the other hand, their tracks often carry a dark and brooding mood and their spacious, minimalist arrangements wouldn’t sound out of place underneath a Kendrick Lamar verse.
It’s safe to say, there’s more to Purity Ring than meets the eye.
